The TAPS school community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Gaiah-Rose Maikuku, whose passing was confirmed yesterday afternoon. Her death has brought deep sorrow to classmates, teachers, and families, as well as to the wider community that followed her journey with hope and compassion.
Gaiah-Rose faced significant medical challenges from a young age and was widely admired for her strength and bravery. Despite enduring repeated medical events that placed immense strain on her small body, she continued to fight with remarkable courage. Her passing has left many reflecting on the resilience she showed and the light she brought to those around her.
Heartfelt condolences have been extended to Gaiah-Rose’s whānau, loved ones, and friends during this profoundly painful time. Messages of support and aroha from the community have poured in, offering comfort to her family, who have expressed deep gratitude for the kindness and compassion shown.
School leaders have acknowledged that the death of a child is especially difficult for families and can be confusing and distressing for other children. Parents and caregivers are being encouraged to speak openly with their children, allow space for questions, and support them in sharing memories or emotions as part of the grieving process.
Gaiah-Rose is being brought home to Te Awamutu, where she will spend time with her family surrounded by love. She will then be taken to Maketu Marae in Kāwhia to continue her tangi, in accordance with cultural traditions. Further details regarding her funeral service have not yet been finalized and will be shared when the whānau are ready.
As the community mourns, Gaiah-Rose Maikuku is being remembered not only for the challenges she faced, but for the strength, spirit, and love that defined her life. Her memory will remain deeply held by all who knew her and those whose hearts she touched.
